Makala Aayana is a Caribbean-American artist, engineer, and wellness curator from Atlanta, Georgia based in New York City. Her practice spans photography, collage, and painting, tracing the threads that bring us back into relationship with ourselves and one another.
Makala's work moves between the intimate and the archival. Her documentary work, including projects like Proof of Presence and The Caretta Research Project, approaches documentation as an act of care, exploring how memory and nature intersect. Her practice also extends into curation and community-building as the curator of A Concept: You, a creative wellness collective rooted in the knowing of where and who you come from and how that deepens our understanding of who we are becoming.
Makala’s commitment to community-care is not peripheral to her practice. It is the practice.
